The end of the year is a very busy time for airports, as people fly off to visit friends and family for the holidays. Many A380 airports help their passengers get into the festive spirit with special events and decorations. Ice rinks, Christmas trees, flying Santas... here are some features you can expect.
A Winter Wonderland at Munich Airport
In 2018, the airport’s MAC Forum is celebrating its 20th year of becoming a winter wonderland. From November 17 until December 26, passengers can enjoy a pine forest surrounding a giant ice rink, live music and a huge range of seasonal stalls at Munich Airport. Open from 11 am to 9 pm every day, there are various jazz and rock artists on stage Tuesday to Sunday from 6 pm, as well as a DJ on Thursdays.
Tree-Lighting Ceremonies and Gift-Wrapping at Atlanta Airport
Every year at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport there are 12 trees specially decorated (by Consular Corps officers) to represent each of 12 different nations (Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, Guyana, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Japan, Lithuania, Nigeria, Sweden and Turkey).
Typical festive treats include live music, post-security gift-wrapping for those last-minute presents and surprise Santa visits. There’s also the annual Toyland programme – a show, entertainment and gifts for hundreds of local children, which has been running for over 20 years.
It's already time to start prepping Concourse F for Global Winter Wonderland! Soon 12 trees decorated by the Atlanta Consular Corps will adorn the International Terminal. The official tree lighting is on Nov. 29! pic.twitter.com/Do9VZHfo0S— Atlanta Airport (@ATLairport) 13 novembre 2017
Themed Celebrations at Singapore Changi Airport
Each year Singapore Changi Airport picks a new theme to base its festive decoration and events around.
Last year’s Hello Kitty and Friends theme saw drones forming snowflakes around the terminal and plenty of themed displays, games and activities around Terminal. There was also a giant Christmas tree in Terminal 1.
This year the airport has decided to go full Harry Potter style! It’s going to be a Wizarding World Holiday at Changi Airport, with full-sized exhibits for travelers to explore, Quidditch challenges, photo ops all-around the airport, and daily snow and night shows! And it will last until mid-February (every day from 10am to 10pm).
Pets Unstressing Passengers at LAX… Dressed in Festive Gear!
Los Angeles International Airport kicks off the holiday season every year with Santa flying in a helicopter and handing out gifts to local kids, and the main airport signs are lit with snowflakes and icicles throughout the season.
Icing on the cake: the famous PUPs (Pets Unstressing Passengers) will be dressed accordingly in festive gear to provide a peaceful moment to passengers throughout the airport.
Ribbon Trees at Heathrow
Every year Heathrow’s terminals are decorated with its signature ‘Ribbon Trees’. Other typical entertainment includes daily visits from Santa Claus, carol singers, a brass band, and ‘gift helpers’ on hand to help you find that perfect present.
Sparkling Trees at Dubai Airport
Even though it’s likely to be warm and sunny when you touch down at Dubai Airport in December or January, that doesn’t mean the airport doesn’t like to get in the festive spirit.
Highlights in previous years have included a Swarovski crystal tree, a gift-wrapping station, seasonal menus in the restaurants and snowman building for kids, as well as carol singing and special guest music acts.
