Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a blend of cultures living in harmony in a city of skyscrapers and busy streets. You can find traditional Malay houses and food in Kampung Baru, see the rich Hindu heritage in the stunning Sri Mahamariamman Temple, and discover the city’s extensive Chinese influence in the Thean Hou Temple, not to mention its colourful Chinatown. For its architecture, museums, restaurants and natural beauty, Kuala Lumpur is a city with magic and majesty.
Independence Day: Merdeka Celebrations
If you’re visiting in late summer, you’ll have the luck of experiencing Malaysian Independence Day. On August 31, 1957, the country’s first prime minister shouted ‘merdeka’, or ‘free’, triumphantly seven times to announce Malaysia’s independence from Britain. Today the celebration is carried out with a parade representing the country’s diversity along with organizations from the whole spectrum of society. Fireworks fill the night sky and continue for six days together with music in a competing festival of its own called Pyrobeat, which includes concerts, foods and games as well.
Natural Oasis: Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve
A tropical rainforest in Asia is nothing unusual, but what makes the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve so special isn’t just what it is, but where it is. Located in the shadow of the 421-meter high Kuala Lumpur Tower in the heart of the city, the park is the only piece of tropical forest left in the capital, and is a marvelous refuge from the fast pace of urban life in this rapidly growing modern metropolis. The forest reserve has a number of nature trails for you to enjoy, with the chance to see monkeys, exotic birds and butterflies.
Living Fireworks: Kampung Kuantan Fireflies Park
A trip to nearby Kuala Selangor to explore its riverbanks will give you a chance to witness a unique and dazzling phenomenon. The mangrove trees growing in abundance in the area attract masses of fireflies. It’s a colorful sight and the perfect opportunity to take a boat tour in traditional sampans (small wooden boats) on the river to see the fireflies up close. This is one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. The experience of seeing the beautiful lights fly through the air or light up a tree is one you don’t want to miss!
